Material Issue was a power pop power trio from Chicago, Illinois. Their trademark was a brand of dense, rich, manic, and powerful pop tunes. Their lyrics revolved heavily around themes of love and heartbreak, having a phalanx of girl's-first-name-titled songs. Singles such as "Diane" and "Valerie Loves Me" remain staples of rock radio. Formed in 1985, Material Issue was the brainchild of frontman Jim Ellison (who also played guitar, provided lead vocals, and wrote all Material Issue songs).

Written by: Jim Ellison Transcribed by: Mike Novak
I'm not super sure about the chorus, but what I have here works for me... And incidently, the lyrics in the liner notes for this song our wrong in a few places; that's so like them. :)
G Well I know it's been a little while
Bmin Since the first time that I made you smile
EminDC And I thought I'd take this opportunity
G To dig a little deeper inside
BminEmin And try to find out what someone like you
DC is trying to hide from me
CD Well I hope that you don't get angry girl
GF#FE I hope you don't get hurt
DCDCG By the things I found while goin' through your purse
Your Make-up, your compact, lipstick, and shit like that And the keys that you keep on a chain Your cigarettes and my lighter too And a picture of your sister God I think your one in the same
Then I cleverly put all these things back into place so you Wouldn't think that I was a jerk The things I found while goin' through your purse
Then I cleverly put all these things back into place so you Wouldn't think that I was a jerk The things I found while goin' through your purse
[Drum fill... next verse no guitar]
Well a photo of your mother too And all the guys who date you And your high school graduation ring And a check stub from the place you work Some poetry from some Stupid jerk who's tryin' to Steal your heart away from me
Well I hope that you don't get offended girl Yeah and I hope you don't get hurt By the things I found while going through Yeah the things I found when I was goin' thru The things I found while goin' thru your purse
