John's first record released was under the stage name "Johnny Cougar" at the behest of Tony DeFries, his first manager. Mellencamp claims it was against his knowledge and will, and he hated the name.

AmFFadd9*G What if I came knocking on your front door some night? AmFFadd9*G Would you open the window and drop me down the key? AmFFadd9*G What if I came knocking on your bedpost that same night? AmFG Would you open up your heart or try to get the best of me?
AmFFadd9*G
AmFFadd9*G What if I came knocking on your brain the next day AmFFadd9*G And ask for your truth and your love and your honesty? AmFFadd9*G Would you build up your big walls and try to hide behind that smile AmFG Or would you try to pull the wool right over me?
AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking? AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking?
AmF Fadd9* G So what if I came kicking scared you a little bit AmFFadd9*G And came on strong would you think AmFFadd9*G That there's something wrong with me? AmFFadd9*G Or could it be your fear, of trying something real AmFG Or just afraid to touch a guy like me?
AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking? AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking?
Am [Drums]
N.C. So let's just say it worked out like a storybook dream N.C. And we lived happily ever after G (x6) Fa la la la
AmFFadd9*G What if I came crying after just a few weeks AmFFadd9* And said I misread my heart G It's not really meant to be?
AmFFadd9*G
AmFFadd9*G So if you hear some knocking on your window tonight AmFFadd9*G You can bet that it's,huh, probably me AmFFadd9*G But let it be known that we're just a pair of tumbling dice AmFG And the outcome of these crap shoots is hard to see
AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking? AmFFadd9*G So what if I came knocking?
AmFFadd9*G Knock, knock, knock, knock, knock, knocking AmFFadd9*G Kick, kick, kick AmFFadd9*G What if I came knocking? AmFG On your front porch tonight, tonight?
