De Vries is the son of Dutch parents, but was born in the former Dutch colony now called Indonesia.
De Vries played in bands such as The Rocking Sensation Boys, The Daggers, The Firebirds (later called The Fire Devils). These bands were part of the so-called 'Indorock' wave: Indonesian rock & roll, tremendously popular in 'pre-Beatles' The Netherlands.
