Fauré was born in Pamiers, Ariège, Midi-Pyrénées, to Toussaint-Honoré Fauré and Marie-Antoinette-Hélène Lalène-Laprade. The youngest child of a large brood, he was sent to live with a wet nurse until he was four years old.
